The gentleman in this picture resigned from his post in 1899.
Though, we may have not seen him, we would have heard the reason he supposedly gave for his resignation, which was dependent on his job before resigning. Who is he? What was his job? And what was the reason he gave, (which is now quoted widely)?

Blind patients => Patents. Charles H. Duell who resigned as the head of the U.S Patent office claiming (apocryphally) that "Everything that can be invented has been invented".
He was the director of the US Patent office. He resigned because he thought that everything that could be invented had been invented.
