Daily Question 21

Another connect... this one from Kaushik

1) Nearest neighbour interpolation / Voronoi Diagrams
2) Map of London, Soho particularly, map of outbreak of cholera due to a faulty water pump
3) John Snow
4) Georgy Voronoy

John snow used a Voronoi diagram in 1854 to illustrate how the majority of people who died in the Soho cholera epidemic lived closer to the infected Broad Street pump than to any other water pump.

Cracked by Vishal, arun, and anon.... JoJo took my 'know your quizmaster' motto to heart, but forgot that I wasn't the QM for this question after all.

Oh, and this link (Sexy Nerd) was sent in by Samaadhi... Do check it out, its hilarious, and he's right, could very well be the anthem of the quiz blog :P

Basically Nearest neighbour interpolation is where u have a set of points and u map the areas for which this point is the closest point for all points within that area.
Used by physician John Snow to describe the outbreak of cholera in Soho, London due to one particular faulty water pump in 1854.
Later named Voronoi diagrams after Russian Mathematician Georgy Voronoy.

Lovely Question - was this the thing that was mentioned before that Infosys quiz?

Pic4:Famous mathematician whose name I forget.

Connect:Natalie Portman. It has to be Natalie Portman :D. Something to do with graphical map interpretation?

AAAAnnnnd... after a brief hiatus... here we go again!

Connect is the Voronoi Diagram

Pic1 is as wiki puts it:
The Voronoi diagram of a random set of points in the plane

Pic2 and 3 refer to John Snow (3) who used a Voronoi diagram in 1854 to illustrate how the majority of people who died in the Soho cholera epidemic lived closer to the infected Broad Street pump than to any other water pump.

4 is Georgy Voronoy, who defined the Voronoi Diagram.
