The island of Surtsey, formed by a volcanic eruption off the coast of Iceland is named after Surtr, ruler of Muspelheim and the leader of the fire giants in Norse myth

Hmm, Basically the funda is .. Odin refers to Mercury and the monster breathing fire is the Sun, and Life refers to Earth.. So w.r.t. Geography lesson fundaes, Earth will realize about Armageddon ( which I guess is Ragnarok, in Norse mytho) when Mercury is "swallowed" by the Sun and thus, the ref to the comic..
An alternate version of the question could be made as reference to David and Goliath (the comic sans the dialogues, i.e)
